Amoy Instrumental

Amoy is in the Southeastern province of Fujian, across the strait from Taiwan. The language and culture are closely related to that of Taiwan, thus the image of the old Taiwanese flag. Here’s an Amoy Opera instrumental on a label I’ve never seen before. The name of the label translates as something like “Country Love Company”. The music sounds very much like Taiwanese Opera (coming soon in a future post).

Thanks for what you posted. However, it is the national flag of China befor 1949 (now still the flag of “the Republic of China” in Taiwan). Chian did take control of Taiwan after WW2, but
not the communists.

Thanks for the correction. I’ve edited the post and added a link to a more detailed history of Taiwan.

while 爱国公司 can lit be translated as ‘love-country company’, ‘爱国‘ is an established compound that means ‘patriotic’. the label says it was published in Amoy (now known as Xiamen). Makes sense that they’d put a ROC flag on the label if it was published pre-1945. That version of the flag wasn’t adopted officially until 1928: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_the_Republic_of_China. So it must have been published sometime after then? Also, I think the number at the bottom is how many copies they printed.
